Background of the study
Urban centers in Nigeria are melting pots of diverse linguistic influences, where Nigerian English is continually reshaped by contact with indigenous languages and global dialects. This study examines how language contact affects lexical semantics—specifically, the meanings and connotations of words—in Nigerian English among urban populations. Data from media broadcasts, everyday conversations, and digital communications indicate that speakers often adopt or adapt lexical items from other languages, resulting in semantic shifts that reflect the dynamic nature of urban communication (Olu, 2023). The research investigates how these lexical borrowings and hybridizations create new semantic networks and influence word usage. In doing so, the study addresses questions about language standardization, identity, and the potential for semantic ambiguity. By combining corpus analysis with ethnographic interviews, the study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the processes through which language contact reshapes the lexicon of Nigerian English, reflecting both local innovation and global influence (Chinwe, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Although language contact is widely recognized as a driver of lexical change, there is limited research on its specific impact on the semantics of Nigerian English in urban settings. Preliminary findings suggest that borrowing from other languages may lead to semantic ambiguities and inconsistent usage. This study seeks to address these issues by systematically documenting lexical semantic changes and their effects on communication.
