Background of the study
Urban centers in Nigeria are melting pots of diverse linguistic influences, where Nigerian English is continually reshaped by contact with indigenous languages and global dialects. This study examines how language contact affects lexical semantics—specifically, the meanings and connotations of words—in Nigerian English among urban populations. Data from media broadcasts, everyday conversations, and digital communications indicate that speakers often adopt or adapt lexical items from other languages, resulting in semantic shifts that reflect the dynamic nature of urban communication (Olu, 2023). The research investigates how these lexical borrowings and hybridizations create new semantic networks and influence word usage. In doing so, the study addresses questions about language standardization, identity, and the potential for semantic ambiguity. By combining corpus analysis with ethnographic interviews, the study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the processes through which language contact reshapes the lexicon of Nigerian English, reflecting both local innovation and global influence (Chinwe, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Although language contact is widely recognized as a driver of lexical change, there is limited research on its specific impact on the semantics of Nigerian English in urban settings. Preliminary findings suggest that borrowing from other languages may lead to semantic ambiguities and inconsistent usage. This study seeks to address these issues by systematically documenting lexical semantic changes and their effects on communication.

Objectives of the study

  • To identify lexical items in Nigerian English influenced by language contact.
  • To analyze the semantic shifts resulting from these influences.
  • To evaluate the impact of such shifts on language clarity and identity.

Research questions

  • What lexical changes occur in Nigerian English due to language contact?
  • How do these changes affect word meanings?
  • What are the implications for effective communication?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it offers insights into the processes of lexical semantic change in urban Nigerian English, informing educators, linguists, and policymakers about the effects of language contact on meaning and communication.

Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to analyzing lexical semantics in Nigerian English among urban populations and does not cover rural language practices or other linguistic features.

Definitions of terms

  • Language Contact: The interaction between speakers of different languages leading to linguistic change.
  • Lexical Semantics: The study of word meanings and their relationships.
  • Nigerian English: The localized variety of English spoken in Nigeria.
